The ups and downs of life as a small-cap med-tech company go on for TearLab (TEAR).
There's still plenty of controversy regarding this name, not the least
of which is a mixed bag of clinical papers on the company's osmolarity
system, but strong system bookings certainly haven't done the stock any
harm.
Most recently, though, the company announced the appointment of Seph Jensen, a long-time Alcon (part of Novartis (NVS))
veteran, as the company's new President and COO. Not only can Jensen
bring experience on the device side of ophthalmology to the company and
help the company appropriately build its sales/marketing efforts, but
the addition of an industry veteran from a well-known company helps the
image of TearLab as well.

Seeking Alpha: The Only Tears From TearLab Are Tears Of Joy For Now
Some day I'll learn to buy the shares of the med-tech stocks I really
like before I write them up for Seeking Alpha. Emerging eye care
diagnostic company TearLab (TEAR)
was already on its way up when I wrote on the company in March of this
year, but the stock has gone on for a further gain of about 66% since
then, and it's hard to beat that sort of performance.
In the meantime, nothing has changed to dull my enthusiasm for the stock other than to say that the sharp move up has blunted some of the long-term potential from here. TearLab continues to book orders literally faster than they can fulfill them, and the margin leverage is coming along nicely. Now with the possible entry of generic competitors to Allergan's (AGN) Restasis - the one prescription pharmaceutical for the condition TearLab diagnoses - the value of an accurate diagnostic to eye care professionals could be all the greater.

Seeking Alpha: Can TearLabs Stay On A Tear?
As I've lamented before, there just aren't many ways for investors to
play the ophthalmology market. Aside from a few small biotech/pharma
companies and Cooper (COO), the bulk of the industry is locked away within larger companies like Allergan (AGN) and Novartis (NVS). But it's not just scarcity value that makes TearLab (TEAR)
interesting. TearLab has developed a quick test for dry eye disease
that not only can be done in the doctor's office, but is actually
profitable for the doctor to do. With an innovative test and a
tried-and-true disposables-based model with a low breakeven level,
TearLab could be an interesting small-cap speculation even here after a
doubling in the stock.
