Investopedia: Oxford Industries Experiences Some Growing Pains

Change can be painful, and while Oxford Industries' (NYSE:OXM) move to a more proprietary and aspirational product assortment has produced solid gains for long-term shareholders, there has been a lot of volatility along the way (shares went from over $50 in 2007 to below $5 in 2009). Oxford's third quarter is perhaps a microcosm of some of those challenges - top-tier brands like Tommy Bahama and Lilly Pulitzer continue to grow well, but the Ben Sherman and legacy Lanier businesses are struggling and it's taking a lot of money to support the company's hybrid direct retail/wholesale model.

Investopedia: PVH - Maybe Not Spectacular, But Solid Will Do

'Tis the season when shoppers and retail investors are a little more prone to losing their ever-loving minds, so it wasn't altogether shocking to see PVH Corp (NYSE:PVH) do well on strong volume after a respectable, but not spectacular quarter. I continue to believe that PVH is a well-run apparel company, and that its acquisition of Warnaco (NYSE:WRC) is a strong move with benefits in both the short and long term, but it's hard to see today's price as any sort of holiday special.

Investopedia: Uniting CK Should Pay Off For PVH Corp

The apparel and footwear sectors have been seeing more than their share of acquisition activity over the past year, as companies look to better leverage supply chains and distribution and better compete with overseas competitors. PVH Corp (NYSE:PVH) is paying a lot to bring Warnaco (NYSE:WRC) into the fold (and further consolidate the Calvin Klein brand), but this deal looks like a relative win-win, where both the acquirer and the acquired are making a smart deal.

Investopedia: Bonkers Expectations May Still Be lululemon athletica's Biggest Challenge

It looks like the momentum trade is back "on" for lululemon athletica (Nasdaq:LULU) as investors cheered a solid second quarter and encouraging third quarter guidance. With lululemon's comps remaining in the double-digits and demand continuing to outstrip supply, the biggest challenge for this company may simply be living up to expectations. Although this remains one of the strongest-growing and most productive stories in retailing, valuation and expectations look more than a little breathless.

Investopedia: Should Investors Pay Full Price For PVH?

Despite a steady drumbeat of doom and gloom (it's an election year after all), investors haven't needed much coaxing to buy up retail and apparel stocks this year. PVH (NYSE:PVH) has a lot going for it, including two well-known brands that seem capable of defying gravity in Europe, but the stock's performance has already more than doubled that of the S&P 500 over the trailing year. While the company does seem to have operating momentum on its side, valuation already presumes a lot of things go right for this company.
